Getting What You Want

How can you get what you want if you do not know what you want?  This is my main struggle, which I'm trying to overcome and figure out!  I can sit back and say I want more money, to be debt free, to create a college fund for my daughter, to go on vacation every year, to drive a nice car, live in a nice home, the list goes on and on.  The problem isn't necessarily figuring out what you want but how to get what you want.

At this point in our lives, Nate and I have a lot to be thankful for, but we have so much more we would like to accomplish.  Have we completely figured out how to get what we want? Not yet, but have we started trying, yes!  Our main goal is bringing in a generous source of income that comes in every month, no matter what our J-O-B brings in!  One way we plan to bring in this additional source of income is owning rental homes.

How can you get one step closer to getting what you want?  I recommend making a list of the things you would like to accomplish, allowing for at least two bullets underneath.  Once you have your list, go back through and do some deeper thinking.  List the different ways that you can accomplish your goal(s).  Not only will writing down what you want make it more real, but expanding on ways to get it accomplished leads you one step closer to getting what you want!

Here's to getting what Nate and I want!

Take Action!

If you are like me, you have found yourself watching an infomercial at one time or another.  These works of advertising genius will have you “Saying Goodbye to Acne” or doing its best to convince you that you cannot live without the “Shark Vacuum.”  My personal favorites are aimed at losing weight, or getting in shape.  “Eat and Lose Weight” “Lose 30 lbs. in 6 Weeks” “Wesley Snipes Uses the Total Gym” just to name a few.  Whether you are captivated by the latest kitchen gadget, or Tony Horton’s ability to get rock hard abs in 10 minutes, there is one reason that consumer’s buy into these advertisements.  They promise results with little effort, time, and/or investment.
If you have read or watched The Secret, this has similar claims.  I am a firm believer in the Law of Attraction, and the Power of Positive Thinking, but I also believe there has to be some type of action on your part to actually get what you want.  In The Secret there is a scene where a gentleman is wallowing in his sorrows about getting bills in the mail every day.  So his answer is to visualize getting checks in the mail instead of bills.  VOILA it works!  Checks just start pouring in.  I’d like to think that if you started to focus on getting checks in the mail it would motivate you to make it happen.  That’s the part The Secret omitted; probably because it would have sold less books and DVD’s.
All of us have things that we want.  Some seem out of reach, and some do not.  All of them are achievable, but you have to take action!  I was talking about what I want with a business associate of mine a couple days ago, and I said, “I’ve been planning to buy a rental property for a long time but…” He interrupted me and said, “Stop planning and get out there!”  He is right.  It’s time to get out there and start creating the reality that I want my life to be.

Here's to taking action!

The Beginning, Part 1

To start, you have to ask yourself who doesn't want to be wealthy, but the start for us probably began a few months ago over a few drinks at our local bar The Mill Tavern.  This is where I call our first "real" discussion of things we want in life and how we are plan to get there.  Now don't get me wrong, Nate and I had many conversations about our life and what we want, however, from that moment forward these conversations slowly began taking over our lazy idle time.  Instead of sitting in front of the TV watching American PickersThe First 48 (one of many crimes shows we enjoy), or simply turning on Netflix to find a new movie or an old classic to stream, we started doing less of our lazy idle time time and started taking ACTION.  First we began by gathering books to read that will educate us financially and motivate us to continue.

The first book on our list to read was Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki.  Now there are many different view points about Robert Kiyosaki, but I can honestly say that I liked his book and this has helped me gain insight on how to start thinking about myself (financially) first, which has lead to my personal goal of paying myself first.  To many this means your savings account, however, Robert forces people to think outside the box and to question the way you were taught all your life!

After finishing the book, we discussed the things we liked and ideas of Roberts that we question, before finally taking mental notes on the things we learned and how it will help us on our Cashflow Adventure!

Melissa's Intro

As Nate stated our ultimate goal is becoming wealthy and you will soon see what risks we are willing to take and make so that happens!  In 2007 when I graduated from IUPUI with a Bachelor of Science in Education, I never would have guessed that I'd be where I currently am today!  As soon as I graduated I was a struggling single mom looking for anything that paid the bills, but didn't sacrifice my self worth.  Through a referral I got an interview with Yeager Properties, which has come to be an amazing opportunity and has taught me more than I ever would have imagined.

Nate and I have always talked about being successful, but talking only goes so far!  We now have turned our talking into action and hope you stick along for the ride!!

Nate's Introduction

Hello friends, family, business associates, and strangers:

My name is Nate (or Nathan) Weis, and I started this blog with my wonderful girlfriend Melissa Snelbaker (Wheel of Fortune anyone?).  Our goal is to document our adventure of risking money and time with the end goal of being wealthy.  I am sure as these posts go, we will succeed and fail at many different endeavors.  I am not afraid of risk or failure, and will consider any mistake as a learning experience.  I love interacting with people, and look forward reading what you have to say about our endeavors as well as hear about what you are doing in an attempt to aquire wealth!

To start things off, I wanted to tell you a little about myself (I am sure Melissa will do her own introduction, so she can tell you about herself).  If you know me, you know that I own my own residential design firm.  If you don't, you can check out what I do on a daily basis here http://www.mcginnisdesigngroup.com/.  I am very proud of this business, and thoroughly enjoy it...most of the time.  The McGinnis Design Group (MDG) has provided me with enough money to live a comfortable life since it's inception in 2003.  Here's the hitch, MDG doesn't work without me.  In reality if I took a couple months off, we would probably go out of business.  So although technically I am a small business owner, I truly consider MDG a job.  Instead of telling people that I own my own business, many times, you'll hear me say that I own my own JOB.  To be clear (especially to all my business associates that may be reading this), I love my company and what I do.  I never plan to stop designing homes.  The goal is to create residual income so I don't have to rely on my design firm for income.

In addition to MDG, I also help run a non-profit called Campers Kicking Cancer in memory of a friend we lost in 2008.  You can read about what we do here http://www.camperskickingcancer.com/.  I am very passionate about this organization, and honestly wish I had more time to dedicate to it.  When our Cashflow Adventure starts creating some income for us, I look forward to focusing on this organization more.

On top of those two, I am also a silent partner in an Indie Record Label (http://www.mossbackrecords.com/), and passionate about getting things free (www.afreething.com/weasel5152).

Thanks for reading this introduction, and I look forward to sharing this amazing adventure with all of you!  If something we do inspires you, we'd love to hear about it so don't be shy!

Here's to success!

Nate
